Warm Coffee and Cold Hands

The autumn air in the courtyard was crisp, but Maya didn’t mind the chill. She sat on the wooden bench, her sketchpad open, trying to capture the way the afternoon light filtered through the orange leaves.

“If you press the pencil that hard, you’re going to tear the paper,” a voice said softly.

Maya looked up. It was Leo, a classmate from her history seminar who usually sat two rows behind her. He held two steaming paper cups and wore a crooked smile.

“I took a guess, but you look like someone who needs hot chocolate,” he added, holding out one of the cups.

Maya blinked, surprised, then smiled back as she took it. “How did you know?”

“You’ve been fidgeting with your scarf for twenty minutes, and you haven’t taken a sip of anything,” Leo said, sitting down beside her at a respectful distance. “Plus, everyone knows hot chocolate makes drawing easier.”

She laughed, a clear sound that seemed to chase away the afternoon cold. “Is that a proven scientific fact?”

“Absolutely. Tested it myself in middle school,” he replied smoothly, though a subtle blush crept up his neck.

They sat together for nearly an hour, talking about everything and nothing—the stress of upcoming final exams, their favorite obscure bands, and how the campus café always managed to burn the toast. With every shared joke, the quiet space between them grew smaller.

As the sun began to dip behind the library towers, Maya closed her notebook. “I should probably head back to the dorm before it gets completely dark.”

“Right,” Leo said, standing up. He hesitated for a moment, clutching his empty cup. “Hey, Maya… are you drawing here again tomorrow?”

Maya wrapped her scarf a little tighter, looking up at him with a warm smile. “Only if you bring the hot chocolate.”

“It’s a deal,” Leo said, his smile brightening the fading dusk.
